What is Pilates?

Pilates is a method of exercise developed over 90 years ago by Joseph Pilates. Popular with dancers and athletes for decades, the method’s exercises have been sought out for performance enhancement and rehabilitation. In the professional physical therapy setting, the exercises have been incorporated into therapeutic exercises, back rehab, and injury prevention programs.

Pilates is a series of controlled movements emphasizing quality rather than quantity making one feel invigorated rather than exhausted after a session.  The exercises work to increase the awareness of core stabilizing muscles while strengthening and lengthening the muscles that allow flexion, extension and rotation.  Done correctly, the exercises bring a physical change and an enhanced sense of vitality.

Pilates is not a fad.  In recent years the method has become popular and has gained many enthusiasts. Celebrity participation and infomercial marketing have helped this method of exercise become a familiar word.  Unfortunately it has also caused many people to believe that Pilates is just another wave in the sea of come-and-go fitness programs.  Those who learn the fundamentals of Pilates correctly know this is not the case.

Success in Pilates means the exercises have made a difference in how you feel and function. Success also means that you’ll be able to perform the exercises correctly throughout your life in a way that suits you--- in a class, in front of a video, or completely on your own.

Why Pilates?

Unlike exercise programs that concentrate on isolated muscle groups to promote better buns, flatter abs or shapelier arms, Pilates focuses on functional fitness.  This no impact form of fluid movements is designed to stimulate the activity of the deep abdominal and deep back muscles allowing participants to achieve multiple benefits.
